Aspidistra and Bonne Esperance Garden
About
Bonne Esperance — a Victorian garden in the heart of Stellenbosch
Set in front of this 1901 villa, framed by its broekie-lace veranda and corner turret, lies one of Stellenbosch’s quiet pleasures: a landscaped English garden, tended for more than a century and at its most generous in late spring.
Clipped topiary gives the garden its structure, while roses, salvia and soft perennial borders spill over the paths beneath blossoming trees. Old oaks filter the light. It is a garden made for slow wandering, with a new view around every hedge and a bench waiting wherever the shade falls just right.
Come and see it during Garden Town 2026, and enjoy coffee or tea and freshly baked scones on the wide wrap-around veranda, looking out over the English garden. The perfect pause between garden visits.
Bonne Esperance sits on the best corner in town, directly opposite the Stellenbosch University Botanical Garden and a short walk from the town centre.
